Meet the Real Animals Behind the Stories

The animals in Wally’s Reef Gang are not illustrations—they are real marine animals photographed in their natural environment.

This gallery features genuine underwater photographs used throughout Troy Mayne’s Wally stories and introduces some of the remarkable animals that helped inspire Wally, Shelley, Casey and their reef friends.

Every photograph began beneath the surface. Every character began with a real animal.

Real Animals. Real Photographs.

Creating the Wally stories combines underwater photography with imagination and storytelling. The photographs allow children to see the animals as they really appear while the stories give those animals personalities, friendships and adventures of their own.

Explore the gallery, meet the real reef animals and then continue the adventure at the dedicated Wally’s Reef Gang website.
